Boat Name Ideas

Many people name their boat after their spouse, kids, grandkids or career. They also pick clever or funny boat names related to their favorite hobbies, sports, beverage or song. If you own your own company, it is a smart marketing move to name your boat after the company, and instill your brand at every port. 

Boat Name Laws

In the United States and most countries there are really no rules about naming your boat, just about registering it. Although not ideal, it is perfectly fine to have the same boat name as the folks in the slip next to you.

Same goes for your hailing port. You can put the city and state of your choice below your boat name. If given a choice, most people choose the location of their boat vs. the location of their home.

Staying Power

Naming a boat after a spouse or children is nice, but you can run into problems if more kids are on the way. And, it's not very original. Some folks take a couple of letters from each of the kids' names and mush them altogether into one big boat name. Hard to do well, but it can be done.

How Does it Sound

When you are trying to think of boat names, make sure you give them the "radio test". Think about how your boat name ideas sound if spoken over the VHF radio, say, in a call for help.
