Welcome to Custom Boat Names

CustomBoatNames is one of several businesses catering to boaters in the New England-based Nautical Sites Network, with the flagship being the ten-year-old FirstBoat.com.

I started Custom Boat Names in 2003 to make it fun and easy for boaters to name their boats, and added our unique boat name design tool in 2007.  I have since also launched a site that sells shirts, hats, welcome mats, and other items that you can custom order with your own boat name on them - BoatNameGear.com - as well as the original blog solely devoted to boat names, the Boat Name Blog.

But the groundwork for this business really began more than 30 years earlier. Growing up on the Connecticut shoreline, summertime meant boating time. Whether fishing or just hanging around the beach or the docks, spotting the names on the backs of boats was something I always enjoyed.

The slow ride through the harbor was always more interesting when we talked about the boat names that we passed.

I remember feeling a sense of pride when spotting a Connecticut hailing port while traveling, even if just across Long Island Sound to Port Jefferson or Greenport, New York.

It was also exciting to see exotic locations on the backs of boats that had traveled up from the Keys or the Bahamas or down from Maine.
